Toyota RAV4
Toyota RAV4
The sporty compact SUV is the cheapest car here, but loaded with kit
March 2008
The RAV4 can rightly claim to be the model that created the sporty compact SUV segment. Toyota has sold more than two million examples worldwide over three generations, but newer and sharper rivals have stolen the limelight, and the model is fast becoming the forgotten car of the class.
However, it’s still a natural rival for the Tiguan. Of the opponents lined up here, its dimensions are closest to the VW’s, and it shares the German car’s sense of solidity. This XT-R model has chromed grille bars and an under-bumper protection plate, but the RAV4’s styling, which is an evolution of previous models, isn’t as modern as the Honda’s, for example.
The interior fares better, as it’s well built and hard to fault. Silver plastic trim brightens the centre console, and the two-tier layout is straightforward, with easy-to-use radio and climate control buttons.
Unlike the other cars here, the RAV4’s handbrake and gearlever are in a conventional position next to the driver. There isn’t as much seat and wheel adjustment as in the Tiguan, but there’s still a decent sense of space behind the wheel.
In the back, the seats split 60:40 and slide back and forth, which is just as well, because the Toyota has the shortest wheelbase here and offers the least legroom. Crucially, though, there’s a flat transmission tunnel, so the middle seat is more accommodating than the VW’s.
Handy ‘pull-and-drop’ one-touch levers in the boot and on the seat backs fold the rear chairs flat in one action, but even with the seats in place, the Toyota has the biggest boot capacity on test. On the downside, the side-hinged rear door is awkward to use if there are cars parked behind, and the boot is cheaply trimmed.
However, the RAV4 was always supposed to be a compact 4x4 that traded on its sense of fun rather than outright practicality. It has a reputation as the one of the most driver-oriented SUVs, which you might find surprising, considering so few of the firm’s other models have a reputation for delivering much in the way of excitement.
Nevertheless, the current RAV4 maintains the appeal of its predecessors. The handling isn’t quite as car-like as the VW’s and it’s not brimming with feedback, but body lean is well controlled and the steering is sharp and direct, while the RAV4 is agile and inspires confidence.
Sadly, it’s rather less accomplished on the motorway, where the firmly sprung chassis doesn’t settle into a relaxed stride as easily as the Honda. The Toyota’s suspension fidgets over imperfections, and you’re more aware of bumps than you are in the Tiguan.
At 310Nm, the RAV4’s 2.2-litre diesel has the lowest torque output here, and at 11 seconds it’s the slowest from 0-60mph. Throttle response is lazy compared with the CR-V, but the slick six-speed gearbox and light clutch are easy to use. However, the D-4D unit simply doesn’t have the punch of its rivals on this test.
The RAV4 is the cheapest car here, though, and this XT-R trim comes with lots of standard equipment. A driver’s knee airbag, parking sensors, heated folding door mirrors, an electric sunroof, six-disc CD changer, Bluetooth phone connection and cruise control are all included. Can this lengthy kit list help to propel the Toyota to the top spot?

Gas prices are rising and falling... and rising again and falling again. Small fuel-efficient cars, or econoboxes, offer a golden opportunity to become immune to this yo-yo. Since 2004, the Toyota Yaris has been dominating the market, easily overtaking such rivals as the Hyundai Accent and Nissan Versa.
People buy the Toyota Yaris not just for the sake of buying a cheap car, but because they love it! This econobox now enjoys cult-like popularity.
Back in 2001, there were only four models in this segment. In recent years, however, there's been an explosion with regard to the number of alternatives and the overall sales figures. The end is nowhere near; in fact, other models will soon join the party, like the new Ford Fiesta.
With that in mind, I was handed the keys to a 2009 Toyota Yaris Hatchback LE, which is the base model in 5-door configuration. The higher-end RS essentially stands out with a couple of added features and, of course, a $4,500 premium.
The Yaris lineup also includes a 4-door sedan which appeals to more conservative customers. The car is 48-centimeter longer overall, yet the interior lacks the versatility of the hatchback. Besides, it does not sport the same facial expression as the latter.
More versatile
Truth be told, it's easy to fall in love with the 5-door Yaris. The cutesy look and practical ways make it more attractive than a plain-looking sedan with a narrow trunk opening.
In the hatchback, the 60/40 split rear seats fold in a flash to accommodate large items, like a plasma TV. Don't even think about it if you're using the sedan!
As a matter of fact, folding the seatbacks triples the available cargo room (from 228 to 728 liters). Granted, the maximum capacity of a Honda Fit is more than double (1,622 L) and the new Chevrolet Aveo5 can hold up to 1,190 liters, but if you have to choose between the Yaris Hatchback and Sedan (with a trunk of only 365 liters), the decision is pretty easy.
The versatile trunk of the Yaris Hatchback is easily accessible and, while the cargo capacity might not be the largest in the segment, it's still pretty decent.

Toyota Vios
New Toyota Vios 2008
Wed, Nov 5, 2008 by nuklear
Automotive
Toyota wants to push stronger into the South East Asian and Chinese markets. It has built its new 4-door subcompact sedan for this specific purpose.
Toyota Vios 2008 looks to replace Toyota Soluna which has done well in the 1.5 liter subcompact market for Asia. Few years ago, Soluna was rated just below Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla.
US love its Vios. There it is known as Toyota Yaris hatchback or Toyota Belta.
Toyota Vios is found in three grades. The most economical grade is the ‘E’ grade. It is a relatively cheap, beginner’s model available at around RM 78900. This grade finds the car in its most stripped form; unlike G and S which are state-of-art models.
Vios E grade has rear drum brakes instead of the all-disc set up available for the G and S grades. It has14 inch alloy wheels; this again is an inch lesser than what the G and S models have to offer. The advanced grades have dual-front airbags whereas the E variant has a side only air-bag.
Vios line has lately introduced the S grade. It is replete with appearance enhancements. Performance wise it is just as good as the G grade or perhaps only a shade better.
Toyota Aygo
Toyota Aygo (2005 - To Date) summary car review
EYE-CATCHING AYGO
Just when we thought the Yaris was the definitive small Toyota, the Japanese company brought us the Aygo. Cheeky, smart and keenly priced, the Aygo was one third of a partnership that also produced the Citroën C1 and the Peugeot 107. Had Toyota risked their impeccable build quality record for a quick hit? It would seem not as Aygo owners seem very satisfied with their cars. Used examples are available if you search for them and they’re well worth tracking down. (full review)

Toyota Avensis (1998 - 2003)
Toyota Avensis (1998 - 2003) summary car review
ADVANTAGE AVENSIS
Spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, the Toyota Avensis quickly picked up the mantle of its well-liked predecessor, the Carina E, on which it was based. It’s a popular used buy for those for whom value for money is a priority. This family-sized Toyota could be a bit more involving for the driver, but build quality and reliability are unquestionable. Like the Carina E, the Avensis was designed specifically for the European market and rather more so; unlike its predecessor you won’t see it on the other side of the world. All models are built at Toyota’s factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire and most have engines made in Deeside, North Wales. (full review)

Report: Toyota working on $5,000 microcar for emerging markets
Report: Toyota working on $5,000 microcar for emerging markets
Tata's Nano famously promised to bring the opportunity of four-wheeled transport to the world's emerging markets - places such as India, Brazil and the African continent. Now Toyota is reported to be working on a similar car, though its initial price target is roughly double the Nano's originally intended price. The news of Toyota's entry into the super-budget market comes from the Japanese Asahi newspaper, reports Automotive News Europe. To be co-developed with Daihatsu and built in Bangalore, India, the car won't make it to market until 2015.
Toyota iQ Urban Car
Toyota iQ Urban Car
With a length of 2,985mm and height of 1,500mm, with 3+1 seats, the forthcoming Toyota iQ micro urban car is even smaller than the Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car.
AutoblogGreen has some nice new pics of the diminutive Toyota iQ, 1 of which is shown above, and must be close to a life-size depiction of the thing.
And LeftLane is reporting that the iQ’s 1L engine may be cut in 1/2 to make room for a plug-in hybrid engine with a range of 15 miles in electric mode.
At a price of 1,300,000 yen, the Toyota iQ is about 6x the price of the Tata Nano. The iQ gets about 50 mpg, while emitting only 99g of CO2 per Km.
Toyota Corolla Altis’ diesel version
Toyota diesel Corolla Altis to roll out in India
October 19th, 2008 — toyota
Toyota Corolla Altis’ diesel version would soon run on Indian roads. The car manufacturer is geared up to roll-out its diesel version in the Indian car market sensing that diesel luxury saloons are gaining popularity in India..
AFTER THE successful launch of Toyota Corolla Altis in the country, the car manufacturer is geared up to roll-out its diesel version in the Indian car market. The reason for introducing the diesel version is that Toyota is aiming to cater to buyer’s needs in all ways.
The car manufacturer senses that diesel luxury saloons are gaining popularity in the Indian car market. However, for the diesel version of Altis, Toyota is planning the small 1.4 turbo diesel engine , that is currently motorised in the Yaris hatchback, delivering 90-100 bhp. Diesel cars offer improved power, performance, and fuel-efficiency.
Peugeot Citroën small car likely for India by 2011
Peugeot Citroën small car likely for India by 2011
October 20th, 2008 — citroen, peugeot
Following its cues from global auto giants like General Motors, Renault-Nissan, Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai et al, PSA Peugeot- Citroën is also chalking out robust plans to roll out low cost cars for emerging markets like India. This car, which is expected to be introduced by 2011, will be accommodating up to five people and will be having sufficient space for luggage and stowage. The details of the model are limited, but its prospects to arrive in India is high as the French car maker reported that it will be offered in emerging markets like India and China. Chances of battery and hybrid cannot be ruled out as 2011 may see introduction of a number of small cars powered by non-conventional sources of power.
According to reports circulating in the media, PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s low cost car, that will have five doors, is expected to be assembled in Turkey or Poland, and will be sold in markets the Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Turkey, Africa, South America, China and even India. This car, which is likely to wear Peugeot-Citroen badging, will not be sold in Western Europe.
Toyota,Daihatsu to make $5,000 car cheap car for india market may be set a new brand
Toyota,Daihatsu to make $5,000 car cheap car for india market may be set a new brand
October 29th, 2008 — Daihatsu, toyota
Toyota Motor may be looking to take India and other emerging markets by storm with a $5,000 car in the first half of the next decade. However, it could be a tough task for the famously quality-obsessed Japanese automaker to make a dirt-cheap car that doesn’t damage its brand image. Plus, Toyota would face difficulties as a newcomer to the competitive Indian market, where rivals are readying their own low-cost vehicles amid weakening demand as the economy cools.
The Asahi newspaper said Toyota plans to roll out the $5,000 vehicle in the early part of the 2010s under a new brand separate from Toyota, high-end Lexus, and Scion, which targets younger consumers in the United States.
Toyota and Daihatsu declined to comment on the report.
Toyota has so far only disclosed plans for what it calls an “entry family car”, which is scheduled to be produced in India and Brazil from 2010 and 2011, respectively. That car is expected to cost around $8,000, although Toyota has not officially mentioned a price.
The Asahi said Toyota will likely build the $5,000 car in India, with sales also possible in Brazil.
Toyota executives have so far denied any interest in developing an ultra-low-cost car, arguing that selling such a car under the Toyota badge could hurt its brand image.
Engineering a low-end vehicle could be a challenge for Toyota. “Toyota engineers are used to doing the best. But the best isn’t necessary for an emerging-market vehicle, ” said Andrew Phillips, a Tokyo-based analyst for KBC Securities. “It needs to be basic and sturdy. There are all sorts of features that you want to add on, but they add to costs.”
Maruti suzuki to build new Model made-in-India car 2011
Maruti suzuki to build new Model made-in-India car 2011
November 13th, 2008 — suzuki
NEW DELHI: Maruti seems to have come off age after more than two decades it was formed as a joint venture between Japan’s Suzuki Motor and the
Indian government. The company is set to develop an all-new model from scratch by 2011 using its Indian engineering strength.
IV Rao, managing executive officer (engineering) of Maruti Suzuki, told TOI that the company has been strengthening its engineering and design competencies as it plans to nearly double its engineering workforce by 2010 from 560. “We would like to close March next year with 740 engineers and reach 1000 by 2010,” Rao said.
And speaking about the future direction for the Indian R&D team, he said, “Going forward, we would be working on a model that is conceived, developed and designed at Maruti by its own engineering team.” Rao’s statement indicates the fast-growing stature of Maruti within Suzuki’s overall global plans and clearly brings out the future strategy of the Japanese carmaker.
India to be key hub for Fiat’s low-cost brand, says COO
India is set to play an important role in Fiat’s plans to launch an all-new global low-cost car brand by 2010.
While the
Italian auto major is looking at possibly marking India as one of the key hubs for supply of components for this brand, the company may also tap into the experience of its Indian partner Tata Motors, that already holds the distinction of rolling out the world’s cheapest car, Nano.
Silverio Bonfiglioli, chief operating officer of Fiat Group Automobiles International, told TOI that the company sees India as an important participant in the ambitious low-cost brand project, though clarifying that their plan is not aimed at developing a Nano-type ultra cheap car.
“The Nano is positioned in the bottom end of the A segment. We have experience in developing vehicles in the top-end of the A segment or the bottom end of the B segment. It’s that area where we probably want to develop a low-cost car,” Bonfiglioli said.
Indian component suppliers would be tapped for this project. “Local Indian suppliers are cheaper than the suppliers in other countries. And their quality is good too. So we can use India as a base for supply of certain components,” he said.
Fiat already has a purchasing office at New Delhi for components and expects to export parts worth euro 250 million by next year. On help from Tata Motors for the low-cost brand, he said Fiat would rely mainly on its own experience of producing low-price cars, especially in South America. “And if necessary, we will use the Tata experience,” Bonfiglioli said.
To revive its operations in India, the company has lined up aggressive model launch plans. It made a strong entry into the mid-size car segment with the Linea sedan that would compete with the likes of Suzuki Dzire and Honda City.
The petrol Linea costs between Rs 6.17-7.2 lakh while the diesel version costs between Rs 7.1-8.3 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The next new launch
from the company is that of Grande Punto hatchback. “We are hopeful that these two models will help us increase annual sales to 70000 cars by 2010,” Bonfiglioli said.
Fiat has revamped its production strategy in India and now has a JV with Tata Motors for manufacturing cars and engines at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra. The company had a poor 0.2% share of the domestic car market in 2007-08, which it hopes will see a healthy turnaround on the back of the new launches.
Also, it hopes to benefit from the sales and service tie-up that it has with Tata Motors as part of which its cars are sold through select Tata dealerships across the country.
Bonfiglioli said the current slowdown in the market will not see the company scale down its investment plans for India. “The investments would continue as we have to plans for the future,” he said.

Renault-Nissan
How cheap is cheap? Renault-Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn is betting that for autos, the magic number is under $3,000. At a plant-opening ceremony in India Apr. 4, he was already talking up the industry's next challenge: a future model that would sport a sticker price as low as $2,500—about 40% less than the least expensive subcompact currently on the market. Renault-Nissan is the first global automaker to take up the gauntlet thrown down in 2003 by India's Tata Motors, which plans to launch a $2,500 car next year. Both are leading a race to the bottom that could affect the business every bit as much as Henry Ford's Model T did a century ago.
